Lion Orthostat

A huge lion statue that guarded the entrance of an eighth century palace at Zincirl (Palace III). It is made out of basalt.

This lion may have been carved at the Sculptures' Workshop at Yesemk—13 miles southeast of Zincirli.

On display at the Museum of the Ancient Orient in Istanbul.
