Houses 2
ID: INSGCP34

View looking south from the synagogue at the foundation walls of houses that date from the first to the sixth century A.D. The thin walls of these houses gathered around a central courtyard (= insulae) indicate that they did not support a second story or heavy stone roofs. Instead, their roofs were probably composed of small timbers, branches, brush, mud, and plaster—see Mark 2:1–12.
In the background two supporting columns of the modern church are visible.
