Double Gate 1

View looking north northwest. The black dome of the el-Aqsa mosque, located on the Haram esh-Sharif (Temple Mount) is clearly visible (today [2011] it is "silver-colored").

The wall, running from right (east) to left (west) is along the line of the original southern wall of the Temple built by king Herod (37-4 B.C.). On the center/left side of the image is a medieval wall, perpendicular to the "southern wall."

In the foreground, are more recent, predominantly Byzantine, structures excavated by Mazar.
