View looking south into the New Gate. The New Gate is located along the northern wall of the Old City of Jerusalem, in its northwestern corner. It was opened in 1887 by the sultan, Abdul Hamid to assist Russian Christian pilgrims, who were staying at the Russian Compound, outside the Old City walls, gain access to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
