Shrine

View looking at a sacred shrine that was cut into the eastern stands of the Herodian circus at Caesarea Maritima. The niches of the shrine were built into the wall.

A Greek inscription was found here that reads “Merismos [the] charioteer” along with four marble human–shaped right feet. These items were probably dedicated by victors of contests that had been held in the circus.

Translation from Porath, Yosef. "Vegas on the Med — A Tour of Caesarea's Entertainment District." Biblical Archaeology Review, vol. 30, no. 5 (September/October, 2004):29.
