View looking down, on to the area of the southern slope of the acropolis, where the Asclepion and a stoa were located.

The cult of Asclepius, the god of healing, was established in Athens in the late fifth century B.C. – possibly after the city had been devastated by a plague. The cult may have been introduced by practitioners from Epidarus.
