St. George's Church

In the 1880’s Christians from el–Kerak settled in Madaba and were permitted to build churches—but only where there previously had been churches. In 1884 when clearing the debris from an old Byzantine Church the famous Mosaic known as the Madaba Map was discovered. The Greek Orthodox church of St. George (el–Khader) was built over the map and this church was refurbished in the early 1960’s.
