Hammat Tiberias (the "Hot spring[s] of Tiberias") is located about a mile south of the downtown of modern Tiberias. It is an area where there were 17 mineral hot springs that were, and are, used for medicinal purposes—a "health spa" with water temperatures of 140 degrees F.

It was settled from the first through the eighth century AD — and of course, is still in use today. In the course of excavations, the remains of ancient structures were found including three synagogues—one of which has a beautiful mosaic floor.
